Soar Head 2013!!

Posted by Steve Jones on Thursday, November 28, 2013
Well Saturday 23rd November a fairly large contingent from the Devil's made the short trip down to Loughborough BC to take part Soar head. I say short trip as you can still see the power station stacks that are adjacent to the club from the river bank at Loughborough.
I think everyone can concur that this was by far the coldest morning of the year and with brass monkey's crying everywhere, we set about getting boats rigged and bodies kept warm. We had particapants in all three of the divisiions and all small boats that we felt could be entered were. Division One featured Vicky and Beth in a double, Steve (ed) and Kellie debut inthe mixed double and our mens capt Simon with Dan Levy, Dan Joyce and Sam in the quad. It's fair to say that both the quad and junior double had good races in the double and the quad. Even after Sam had thawed out I think they can be satisfied, bearing in mind the lack of training. Something to be built on there. The same can be said of Beth and Vicky, solid times on a very tricky course for a new pairing who hadn't been out often. It has been well documented the trouble that Gage/Jones had on their outing 3 crashes and a very poor bowman (ed) performance, but something to take on to another day. But very well done to the other crews who managed the tricky course so well.

Division 2
The busiest division of the day and it took sometime to get all the boats to the start, again many a shivering body could be seen. Featuring in this race were, Mens quad of El Chairman (Neil) Steve Jim and Gary. Womens boats W.Nov 4+ Of Babs, Kellie, Lucy and Lindsay. W.IM2 4+ Of Nicola, Nat, Sue and Harriet. And the Junior W.J15 2x double debut of Jess and Charlotte. Some very good rows all round, and even though El Chair knew the course oh so very well, he too fell victim rather aptly to The Devils Elbow and 3 crews trying to get round the Otter bend at the same time!!! But good rows all round and some good times with which to build on over the winter months.

Division 3
Smallest contingent of the day with Gary and Babs in the double and  Michelle, Beth, Vicky and Bridget in the novice coxed quad. For some it was the first time they had been out on the river for some it was the second race of the day. And it was to bring the victory to the very competent and smooth crew of Gary Beviss and Babs Walsh to win the novice mixed double event. Congratulations to you both!!!
So as the dust settles over the sticky sodden event that was Soar Head a lot has been learnt by many on the twisty turny tricky course of the soar! This was a day where Simon'ss quad only missed out on victory by a handful of seconds and other crews took part for experience and fun.
The Devils take a break from competiton for the winter to fine tune the speed and technique and errrrr Steering ....
Well done to all that took part and I'm sure we'll get more wins in 2014!! Boston here we come.
Huzzah!!!
