Burton Head 2014

Posted by Julie Paillin on Monday, February 23, 2015
Unfortunately, no victories for the Devils at Burton Head 2014. Although this felt a bit disappointing after our successes at numerous events over the past twelve months there was still a number a number of commendable performances to boost club morale and continue to build our reputation in the rowing community.

The course of 3500m ran downstream from the Riverside Hotel in Branston to the Burton Regatta finish line. The weather was calm with occasional drizzle and light breezes.

Win for Devils Elbow W.IM3.8+ and Nov.8+ at Burton Regatta

Posted by Vikki Thomas on Thursday, August 7, 2014
After a long hot day of challenging races we were all sitting along the bank waiting for the final 2 races of the day, the W.IM3.8+ and Nov.8+ both of these being straight finals. It was getting late, most people had finished racing however it was now time for both crews to check the boat and prepare for their race before heading up to the start line. We (W.IM3.8+) rowed up first ahead of our opposition Burton Leander, both crews attached to the stake boat and with some difficulty due to the ...

Win for Devil's Elbow W.Nov.2x at York Regatta

Posted by Lucy Joyce on Thursday, August 7, 2014
After a few weeks of practice in our double, Vikki and I decided to enter York Regatta. In our first round we were drawn against Van Mildert College of Durham University. We got a good start and won our heat!
Coming back into the landing stage we saw that our opposition for the next round, Peterborough City, we're already boating. We didn't even have time to get out of the boat and had to go straight back up to the start line. This time we were beaten off the start, but pulled back a bit arou...

Learn to row

Posted by Julie Paillin on Friday, May 9, 2014
This past bank holiday Monday saw the culmination of yet another successful learn to row course at Devil's. Many new faces have dedicated time to learn the basics of water safety, capsize drills and rowing technique. In what many continue to describe devils as a fun warm and friendly environment in which to discover the sport of rowing. The new starters all seemed to have enjoyed it and many looking to future and being part of our little club.
On a warmish and breezy Monday, we finish the lea...

Spring Arrives and winter news

Posted by Julie Paillin on Tuesday, April 15, 2014
Here at Devil's it feels like it has been a long winter with high water and poor conditions. But this hasn't stopped alot of things happening down on the river. Both men's and ladies squads trained hard for various events and the ladies did manage a good showing in Head of the river. Sadly the men's race was called off due to the conditions.
Numbers have grown a little over the cold months as have the number of boats, with a little kindness from fellow local clubs we now have a good fleet of ...

Devil's Elbow win Rearsby Tug of War

Posted by Lucy Joyce on Friday, December 27, 2013
Yesterday, a few members of Devil's Elbow Rowing Club headed over to Rearsby to compete in their annual Tug of War competition. Nicola Cheesman, Kellie Gage and myself (with Julie Paillin as photographer)  along with three girls we met on the day entered as a ladies team. After watching all the men, it was our turn to pull. We dug our foot holes in the mud, grabbed the rope and got ready. Since the Tug or War was over a brook and the men had already been, when it was our turn the ground was e...

British Indoor Rowing Championships 2013!!

Posted by Vikki Thomas on Sunday, December 8, 2013
Friday night I arrived in Cardiff after a long hectic train journey following a busy day at the Clothes Show Live. Tired from all the shopping I soon went to sleep to prepare for the day ahead. An early morning energizing breakfast for me, well... a pain au chocolate and a hot chocolate but definitely not any of my Dad's beetroot juice! Tensions started to build as I was waiting for the taxi to arrive...I even had to return to the Hotel's reception to ask for the room key back as I needed ano...

Soar Head 2013!!

Posted by Steve Jones on Thursday, November 28, 2013
Well Saturday 23rd November a fairly large contingent from the Devil's made the short trip down to Loughborough BC to take part Soar head. I say short trip as you can still see the power station stacks that are adjacent to the club from the river bank at Loughborough.
I think everyone can concur that this was by far the coldest morning of the year and with brass monkey's crying everywhere, we set about getting boats rigged and bodies kept warm. We had particapants in all three of the divisiio...

Historic Burton

Posted by Steve Jones on Saturday, November 2, 2013
October 27th 2013.....A date to remember for many involved at the club, but it all started out so quietly. A balmy autumnal Sunday morning down by the Trent in Burton, rowers from far and wide assembled. Amongst this merry crowd were the rowers of Devils Elbow and avid support. Promptly on arrival the assembly of the craft took place that would carry us along on our dual with river and foe, meticulous attention to every nut and bolt, whilst we slipped in the sticky mud under foot.with on goin...

Beeston Row 4/8/13

Posted by Dan Joyce on Monday, August 5, 2013
We began planning our adventure on Saturday night after the Row4fun day. We didn’t really know what to do and decided that it would be a good idea to try and row to Nottingham. After looking at the map and working out where we needed to boat from we decided that the best boats to take would be a double with Nicola and Simon rowing it, and Shrivenham that would be rowed and coxed by Kellie, Babs, Lucy and Dan. We then collected the blades and boats and carried them to the other side of the w...
